“Tricia Martineau Wagner, author and living history presenter, was a guest lecturer at our CMS (Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools) for our Summer Teacher Conference in June 2011 and June 2012. The In-service was a four-day conference for Social Studies teachers in our district for grades two through five. Ms. Wagner lead the “Trailblazers: Reading in Elementary Social Studies” classes as part of the Global Studies program. Tricia Wagner has twelve years of experience as an elementary education teacher and reading specialist. Her four historical non-fiction books dovetail perfectly with the Essential Standard Goals. Themes from her books that tie into classroom curriculum are: determination, perseverance, geography, relationships, grief, survival skills, fame, moving, ingenuity, problem solving, tolerance, forgiveness, friendships, intergenerational relationships, religious perspectives, minority and ethnic relations, pioneers, women’s issues, cowboy life, and slavery. All four of her books have correlating presentations, which she takes to the classrooms for students in grades two through eight. Ms. Wagner travels the country giving these high-interest, hands-on living history presentations and is highly sought after. During the In-service Tricia taught the teachers how to use her books to augment education. The teachers found the conference to be beneficial and they left with a plethora of relevant social studies and writing activities to take back to the classroom. Tricia did an outstanding job with the In-service. The teachers’ comments were very positive. I would highly recommend other districts hiring Ms. Wagner as a primary resource specialist to lead their Social Studies/Writing In-services because of the connection to the curriculum. This is a wonderful educational opportunity for both teachers and students.”
